Which sword is the one used for Iaido?
The Katana or the Iaito? and what is that difference between them?
Katana means Sword. When most people use the word Katana they automatically assume that it is meant to describe a Japanese sword that is sharp. The term Iaito is used to describe a particular type of Katana. An Iaito is a Japanese sword that has a dull blade used to practice using the sword without the risk of getting cut accidentally. However, even an Iaito can still be dangerous because it still has a pointed end. I had a student in an Iaido class make a mistake with an Iaito. The kata used a reverse grip draw (palm up rather than palm down). The idea was that the draw was done to strike an attacker in front of you at close range with the Kashira(tip of the handle) to break his hand before he can draw his sword. Then the sword is aligned past your opposite side (right side), just before stabbing to the rear to stab a rear attacker in the stomach. My student made a good draw but did not get the the tip of the sword past his right thigh before stabbing to the rear. He managed to bury the tip of his Iaito two inches into his right thigh. We had to call para-medics to take him to the hospital. That little mistake cost him six stitches in the deep muscle and another six stitches to close the wound.
Both Iaito and Sharp Katana can be used for Iaido. It is up to the instructor to decide which the students should use.
