How to take a toothpick out of a clay bead?
I'm not very coordinated when it comes to thinking ahead. I left a toothpick in a rather large, flat sculpy bead (since I couldn't take it out when the clay before it had been "kilned"). What should I do to extract it? There's about enough room to get a grip on the toothpick, and that's about it. Would a very small drill bit be able to get it out, or could I burn it out without ruining the bead?
Obviously you must mean poly clay because of the quotes around "kilned" and the fact that a toothpick would have burned out of ceramic clay in the kiln.
It will be harder with the rather soft PVC plastic that results after baking polyclay, but I would suggest using a small drill and maneuvering it by hand. To be able to handle the drill, you can buy a small chuck to hold the drill or buy drills with a 1/4" hex base intended to go into electric screwdrivers, but if you don't want to go shopping that way - clamp the drill bit in a vise or ViseGrip style pliers and turn the bead with your fingers to cut into the wood and pull the fragments out.
Wood burns at a higher temperature than PVC melts and you will ruin the bead.
