Blade Hunter

Skinning game is not exactly an art, but it does take practice, some degree of skill, and most importantly the right knife.
What the knife is right? The right knife is one designed specifically for peeling, appropriately called skinning knife. The skinning blade is more thin, allowing slight inclination to work leather. Peeling also has a knife-edge curve, rather than a sharp point, to avoid accidentally drilling skin or flesh damage.
Over the years, knife manufacturers have sought to fulfill the desires of hunters of the most difficult production knives. They have created super-resistant stainless steel knives and surgical steel. According to Doug Holcomb Northside Fishing in Hillyard, Washington, these knives are great when you have sharp first, but once the edge begins to dull, it is very difficult to re-sharpen them. Doug has been professionally skin, both large and small. He prefers a "good carbon steel sheet "that can sharpen the same in the field if necessary. Of course, ultimately, is the preference of a hunter.
For the hunter who wishes both skin and flesh, it is better to have a good field knife and a skinning knife. The skinning knife has no intention to get in between the bones, or cut bones, when necessary.
A hunter should also have access to what is called a sharpening steel. Working on certain skin types can even hinder the best knives and be able to sharpen your knives in the field saves time. Are you familiar with the correct use of steel? Make a trip to your butcher local and tell them you want to be able to sharpen the knives in the field. Ask if you are shown how to properly sharpen their knives against the steel.
Sounds like a lot of things to take with you, especially if you are carrying your rifle or bow is. Just think about how much time and money you can save to be able to field dress big ball that just brought down, do it all yourself. Not to mention all the weight they have to pack.
As mentioned before, peeled and requires practice. Try your hand at skinning smaller animals until they are more competent and comfortable with the process. The last thing you want do is spoil in the field.
