Good survivalist knife for under $100?
I'm not a survivalist, but often use knives in my artwork/woodwork and I like knives, and I like Man vs. Wild too - muahaha
I googled around and found the one/s Bear Grylls use are maybe in the $500s of dollars range yikes
but there must be some others cheaper, quality
I assume carbon fiber is more $ but I would like to get one at some point
and
is there a technical word for a knife collector? (ex: philatelist : stamps)
Bear Grylls knife, the one that is 500 is a custom and is priced that high because of the show. No other reason for the knife made of RWL34 steel in that size to cost 500 or 600.
BTW, Grylls also uses Buck knives occasionally.
Anyway, I figure you are looking for the medium size fixed blade. There's plenty of choices in that budget, with very decent steels. TOo begin with RWL34 is powder metallurgy version of 154CM, here composition comparison for those two - http://zknives.com/knives/steels/steelgraph.shtml?nm=RWL-34,154CM
So, CPM154 will be very close to that, since CPM is particle metallurgy steel.
That is if you want to go with stainless. Otherwise 1095, D2(semi stainless steel) and few others will make very good blades.
Knife steel faq will help too - http://zknives.com/knives/articles/knifesteelfaq.shtml
Benchmade, Fallkniven, Spyderco, Kabar, Kershaw they all make very decent fixed blades, it's more up to you which shape and steel to choose.
Here's some of the reviews of the fixed blades - http://zknives.com/knives/fixed/index.shtml
I've been collecting knives for a while, but no there's no technical word, knifenut, knifehead, knife aficionado, those are the most used
