Folder Folding

Is it legal to carry a karambit (the folding kind) in New Jersey?
When I go back to college in the fall, my dorm and some of my classes are in a rather...slum-esque part of the city, and many of my classes don't end until 9 at night. I was thinking of purchasing a folder of some kind for self-defense. Now I'm an art student and we carry all kinds of lethal stuff normally (staple/nail guns, ex-acto knives, and hammers are basically standard issue), but I can't exactly go around with an Ex-acto shoved in my pocket and a hammer in my belt loops.
I've read this: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_size_knife_is_legal_to_carry_in_new_jersey and I think a karambit folder might be considered legal to carry? The blades are relatively short on most of the folders (1-2 inches, the non-folding kinds are longer) but I'm not entirely clear on the issue. Any advice someone can give would be great.
I think you would are likely to get charged for possessing such a weapon. Whether the charge would stick is debatable, but do you really want to go through the hassle of getting arrested?
Pepper spray is far more effective for self defense. You don't have to be so close to a potential attacker, and it isn't considered deadly force. All around a much safer choice.
