Why German still retain the old system where the Germanic languages?
This is a question for specialists in Germanic studies. Every other modern Germanic languages, both West Germanic languages (Dutch and English) and North Germanic (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish), has lost the distinction nominative, dative and accusative systems in their name (but not pronoun systems). The genitive is retained however. The exceptions are (1) Modern German ( 'Germanic Western) and (2) Iceland (North Germanic).
Well, Firstly, many Norwegian dialects dative very productive use, not just some phrases. Historical linguists generally can not ask why or why not. Language changes are often related to other (previous) changes. I am sure that North Germanic languages (in the continent - not Iceland), moved to stress the first syllable, in general, and consequently the final syllables (where different vowel signs of the cases) were losing their morphological differences. Iceland maintains different syllable structures. In Norway, the voltage change Forward was a series of impacts on syllable structures, and some dialects have something called "balance vowel others use a process like Turkish - harmony vocal. I can recommend a book for the Nordic languages (in English) if you are interested in reading more. My response should serve as an introduction very fast, however. I have my Ph.D. in Germanic philology and studied many Germanic languages, as OHG, MHG, Old Norse, Old / English Middle ..... janus005 in UMN dot edu
